Flamengo Adidas Cup: Obi-Martin scores twice but Arsenal lose seven-goal thriller to Santos Laguna
Published: December 15, 2023
Denmark U17 international of Nigerian descent, Chido Obi-Martin continues to catch the eye at the ongoing Flamengo Adidas Cup in Brazil.
According to Arsenal youth team expert, Jeorge Bird, Obi Martin played the role of a super-sub after coming off the bench to score twice as Arsenal U17s were beaten 4-3 by Santos Laguna on Friday.
Three players of Nigerian descent started for Arsenal, namely goalkeeper Owen Ademota, central defender Samuel Chinedu and left-back Josh Ogunnaike.
Santos Laguna were two goals ahead inside nine minutes before the Gunners pulled a goal back through Alex Marciniak.
Obi-Martin came off the bench at the interval and scored with a header to equalize for the Londoners but the Mexican team retained the lead shortly afterwards before restoring their two-goal advantage.
The Danish-Nigerian striker scored the final goal of the game when he dusted himself down to convert a penalty after he had been fouled in the area.
Obi-Martin is guaranteed a scholarship deal at Arsenal for the 2024-2025 season while goalkeeper Asemota, an England U16 international, has also been offered a scholarship but nothing is agreed yet.
Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are monitoring the situation of Asemota ahead of next season.
