Carabao Cup: Tosin scores winning penalty, Bassey well-again, Iwobi features as Fulham make history
Published: December 19, 2023
Fulham beat Everton 7-6 on penalties on Tuesday night to reach the semifinals of the Carabao Cup for the first time in their history.
As per team news, Super Eagles central defender Calvn Bassey returned to Fulham's starting lineup after missing the weekend defeat to Newcastle United due to illness and he was joined in the starting lineup by Tosin Adarabioyo and Alex Iwobi.
Bassey partnered Tosin in the center of the defence while Everton old boy Iwobi played in the number 10 position.
The Cottagers took the lead in the 41st minute after an unfortunate own goal from Michael Keane.
But Everton stayed in the game and restored parity in the 82nd minute when Beto headed in from close range to send the game to a shootout.
In the shootout, it looked like Fulham were the team going to be eliminated when De Cordova-Reid missed his penalty but then Amadou Onana also missed which meant it went to sudden death.
In the sudden death, Idrissa Gueye struck the post before Tosin strove forward and thumped his penalty home.
Iwobi was not on penalty duty against his former employers as he was replaced with three minutes remaining.
