FA Youth Cup: Musa helps Manchester United qualify for fourth round
Published: December 20, 2023
Manchester United booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Derby County at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
Spanish-born Nigerian attacker Victor Musa started and was in action for 61 minutes before making way for Ashton-Missin, while defender Habeeb Ogunneye was a non-playing substitute.
As for Derby County, Adisa Osayande and Justin Oguntolu were named among the substitutes.
In a cagey first-half that ended in a goalless stalemate, Musa came close to breaking the deadlock with a shot from inside the area but the Rams goalkeeper made an unbelievable save to deny the United striker.
And a few minutes into the second half, the Nigerian was edged out before he could get a touch after the ball was played across the face of goal.
The Red Devils finally broke the deadlock with fifteen minutes left on the clock when Ethan Williams tapped into an empty net after a brilliant through ball from Fletcher to Wheatley, who saw his shot saved by the goalkeeper.
Derby County coach reacted by bringing on Osayande who has a knack for scoring at the other end and has netted two in this season's U18 Premier League.
Manchester United will be looking to reach the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup when they face Swindon Town at The County Ground in January 2024.
