Osimhen alternative: Another Nigerian striker is Chelsea's Plan B if unable to sign Napoli superstar
Published: December 28, 2023
English Premier League giants Chelsea are in the market for a proven goalscorer in the January transfer window.
According to The Athletic, via Sky Sports, a top striker is high on Chelsea's list if they can raise enough money, with Nicolas Jackson so far failing to convince.
Chelsea's top two targets are Napoli star Victor Osimhen and Brentford's Ivan Toney but a deal would be almost impossible to pull off next month due to the players' valuations.
As per the report, RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Bayer Leverksuen's Victor Boniface have been identified as alternatives to Toney and Osimhen, while a move for red-hot Sporting Lisbon striker Victor Gyorkeres has been ruled out.
Boniface is being looked after by powerful Oslo-based Nigerian agent Atta Aneke, who has close links with Chelsea having brokered the deal that took Ivory Coast international David Datro Fofana to Stamford Bridge in January.
Another of Aneke's clients in Norwegian-Nigerian forward Antonio Nusa is also being courted by The Blues.
Former Royale Union Saint-Gilloise star Boniface is having a breakout season in Germany with 24 goal involvements (16 goals, 8 assists) in 23 matches, confirming that he is a player of quality despite his young age.
Boniface, top scorer in the Europa League for 2022-2023, has seen his market value skyrocket, from 4 million euros at the start of January to a career-high 40 million euros in December, on the back of his fine form.
