Super Falcons-eligible player lands in Morocco with Chelsea squad for training camp
Published: January 05, 2024
Super Falcons-eligible player Ashanti Akpan has landed in Morocco with the Chelsea squad for a warm weather training camp.
Legendary Chelsea Women's coach Emma Hayes has taken six players classed as midfielders for the trip to North Africa, the others being Erin Cuthbert, Sophie Ingle, Melanie Leupolz, Jessie Fleming and Jelena Cankovic.
During the training camp, Akpan will also rub shoulders with Lauren James, Millie Bright and Jess Carter who were named in the Lionesses starting lineup in their shootout win over Nigeria in the last 16 of the 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup.
Chelsea are using the training camp to prepare for their meeting with West Ham United in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup fourth round on January 14 and back-to-back home games with Manchester United and Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge.
Akpan signed her first professional contract with the Blues in December, a deal that will keep her at the London club until 2025 with the option to extend by a further year.
The 18-year-old joined Chelsea in 2013 when she was seven, rising through the youth team ranks to make her senior debut in a 3-1 victory over Reading at the quarterfinal stage of the Women’s FA Cup on March 19,2023.
Akpan was in the Young Lionesses squad that qualified for the next round of the U19 Euro qualifiers and featured in the Algarve Tournament in Portugal last month.
