No 1v1 duel between Zaidu and Saka as Porto confirm Super Eagles left-back is out of CL clash
Published: February 18, 2024
Through a statement on their official X account, Porto have revealed that Super Eagles left back Zaidu Sanusi has suffered a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and external lateral ligament of his knee.
The 26-year-old picked up the injury in the 29th minute during their 2-0 win over Estrela da Amadora in a Liga Portugal fixture yesterday and was replaced by Jorge Sánchez.
This means the Nigeria international will be unable to face Bukayo Saka when Porto host Arsenal at the Estádio do Dragão in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday.
It is also a big blow for Sérgio Conceição's side in their push for the league title-they sit third in the standings, four points adrift of table-toppers Benfica but have played one more game.
It has not been the best of season for Sanusi, featuring in just 5 games for Porto in the Liga Portugal due to injury and his commitments with the Super Eagles.
He featured prominently for the Super Eagles in the just concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations where he only missed one game.
Due to the nature of the nature of the injury, he is unlikely to kick the ball again this season
