England U17 international of Nigerian descent Ethan Nwaneri is in contention to make his UEFA Champions League debut for Arsenal when they take on Porto on Wednesday night.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has included the talented 16-year-old attacking midfielder in the provisional squad for the round of 16 clash at the Estádio Do Dragão.
According to the well informed Arsenal youth team insider, Jeorge Bird, Nwaneri traveled with the Arsenal first team squad for tomorrow’s Champions League last-16, first leg tie away to Porto.
There was a hint that the Anglo-Nigerian was being considered for the trip to Porto as he was among the four academy players that was promoted to first team training on Tuesday.
Apart from Nwaneri, three other players of Nigerian descent classed as U21 players have been included on Arsenal's Champions League roster for the knockout rounds of the competition.
Among the B-listed players are 2023 Flying Eagles invitee Nathan Butler-Oyedeji and forwards Nathan Butler-Oyedeji and Henry Timi Davies.
Nwaneri was a non-playing substitute in back-to-back matches against Lens and PSV Eindhoven in the group stage of the Champions League.
The Hale End Academy product made his second competitive appearance for the Gunners in a 6-0 rout of West Ham United on February 11, 511 days after he made history as the youngest-ever player to feature in the English top-flight.
