'Won the last four games against Nigeria' - Noko Matlou confident Banyana Banyana will make it to Olympic Games
Published: March 13, 2024
2008 African Women's Footballer of the Year, Noko Matlou is confident that Banyana Banyana will qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games at the expense of Nigeria.
Next month, the Super Falcons and the reigning African champions will face off in a two-legged tie to determine one of Africa's two representatives at the Olympic football tournament of Paris 2024.
The first leg is set to take place at MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on April 5 while the second leg will be staged on April 9 in South Africa in a yet-to-be-decided venue.
South Africa have been successful in recent games against Nigeria and beat the Super Falcons 2-1 the last time they faced off at the 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations.
However, the Super Falcons will be brimming with confidence ahead of both games as they have picked up where they left off at the 2023 Women's World Cup with back-to-back wins on aggregate against Ethiopia and Cameroon in Olympic qualifying.
Randy Waldrum's side also thrashed Cape Verde 7-1 on aggregate to qualify for the 2024 Women's Cup of Nations.
Speaking to SABC Sport, Matlou said: "I believe we have a chance to qualify for the Olympics, I do believe we will qualify.
"We played Nigeria a few times, and we won the last four games we played against them - favour is on our side, we will do well against Nigeria."
The Super Falcons have qualified for the Olympic Games on four occasions, more than any other Africa nation.
