Asisat Oshoala, the reigning African Women's Player of the Year, wasted no time etching her name into the history books of National Women's Soccer League expansion team Bay FC.
In a thrilling California derby between Angel City and Bay FC on Sunday, Oshoala bagged Bay FC's first-ever goal, securing a decisive 1-0 victory.
When Oshoala stepped out onto the BMO Stadium turf, the former Arsenal and Liverpool striker became the ninth Nigerian player to feature in the NWSL, according to the official webpage of Bay FC.
The Nigerian forward, who joined Bay FC from FC Barcelona in the offseason, displayed the goal-scoring prowess that has earned her six African Player of the Year awards.
In the 17th minute, midfielder Tess Boade intercepted a pass and found Oshoala lurking in the box. With her first touch, Oshoala unleashed a powerful strike that rocketed into the upper right corner, leaving the Angel City goalkeeper helpless.
This victory marks a dream start for Bay FC, who enter the league with high ambitions and Oshoala's leadership and scoring prowess will be crucial to their success.
The Nigerian superstar has already proven to be a valuable asset, both on and off the field.
Her experience and talent are sure to inspire her teammates and ignite excitement among Bay FC fans throughout the season.
The former Barcelona Femeni star is the first African player ever nominated for the prestigious Ballon d'Or award and holds the record for being the first Nigerian to score in three different FIFA Women's World Cups.
