Dessers to Dele-Bashiru: Five Nigerian players with a point to prove against Ghana and Mali
Published: March 21, 2024
The Super Eagles will face off with Ghana in an international friendly fixture on Friday evening.
It is the first of the two fixtures that will be played during this international break with the other being a clash against Mali on Tuesday, March 26.
A host of changes have been made to the squad that finished second at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with some of the newly invited players hoping to impress.
Allnigeriasoccer.com takes a look at five players with a point to prove ahead of the matches against Ghana and Mali
1.Cyriel Dessers: The Rangers striker last played for the Super Eagles in the 2-1 loss to Algeria in a friendly game in September 2022.
With Victor Osimhen, Taiwo Awoniyi and Victor Boniface missing, the 29-year-old must grasp this rare privilege with both hands and prove that he deserves subsequent call ups.
2.Nathan Tella: The Bayer Leverkusen forward missed the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and now has another big opportunity to stake a claim in the team.
3. Benjamin Tanimu: The Tanzania-based defender is the least experienced in the squad, as he is yet to make his debut.
With William Troost-Ekong and Kenneth Omeruo aging, the Super Eagles will need new center backs and the 21-year-old couldn't have asked for a better time to prove his quality.
4.Jamilu Collins: With Zaidu Sanusi out due to injury, it is time the Cardiff City left-back retook his place in the squad.
Since featuring in all the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, he is yet to have a run of games with Nigeria and there is no better time to prove his significance to the team.
5.Fisayo Dele-Bashiru: Since making his debut in a friendly game against Mozambique, he is yet to play a single game.
With the midfield crying for more creativity, the Manchester City youth product must use these two upcoming games to show why he deserves to be a regular member of the squad in the future.
