Boniface goal and assist help Bayer Leverkusen secure historic Bundesliga title; Tella also in action
Published: April 14, 2024
Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface achieved glory with Bayer Leverkusen as they were officially crowned league champions for the first time in their history following a 5-0 hammering of Weder Bremen at the Bay Arena on Sunday evening.
The former Royale Union Saint-Gilloise marksman made the most of his sixty-two minutes on the pitch, opening the scoring from the spot following a VAR review for a handball in the box in the twenty-fourth minute, giving the visitors an upper hand before heading into the halftime break.
However, the scoring spree resumed in the second half as Granit Xhaka found the back of the net for Leverkusen's second goal of the match courtesy of an assist from teammate Victor Boniface.
Following his assist, he was substituted by Patrik Schick in the 62nd minute, while fellow Nigeria international Nathan Tella also made way for Jeremie Frimpong.
Florian Wirtz got on the scoresheet with a second half hat-trick to wrap up the scoring with goals in the 68th, 83rd and 90th minutes to secure a comfortable win for Xabi Alonso's men.
Bayer Leverkusen are the undisputed league winners after a remarkable season with a winning streak not many clubs in Europe's top seven league's can boast of.
Tonight's two goal contributions ensured that Boniface took his tally to twenty goal contributions (11 goals, 9 assists) in eighteen league appearances this season.
By winning the Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen, Boniface and Tella followed in the footsteps of Sunday Oliseh and Pascal Ojigwe who won the title in 2002 and 1998 respectively.
Boniface was included in the Super Eagles' final squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast but withdrew from the roster after suffering an injury during the training camp in the United Arab Emirates.
