Nigerian stars on the move: Summer transfer watch

From Jay-Jay Okocha to Nwankwo Kanu, Nigeria has produced some of the greatest footballing talent in the sport's history. However, with the 2024/25 ahead and the transfer windows throughout leagues across the globe preparing to open, which Nigerian stars are on the move this summer?

Today, we’ll examine some rumoured and confirmed summer football transfers involving Nigeria’s top-tier, elite-level talent.

Everton and Marseille show interest in Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi

Wilfred Ndidi presents a one-of-a-kind opportunity in the market. A highly sought-after player in the prime of his career, it is no shock that numerous teams are eager to secure the services of the talented Leicester City individual.

According to a report from Foot Mercato, Olympique Lyonnais was eager to finalise a deal for Nigerian international Ndidi. However, despite their best efforts, they have been unable to accomplish this. With his contract set to expire at the end of the month, other clubs, particularly Olympique de Marseille, have emerged as potential suitors.

Unfortunately, Marseille will not be participating in European football next season. Nevertheless, the Phocéen project holds a certain allure with the imminent appointment of Roberto De Zerbi as manager. When the new manager comes in, the midfield might need to be rebuilt. Several players are set to depart the team, with Pape Gueye leaving on a free transfer, Jean Onana's loan ending, and Jordan Veretout and Geoffrey Kondogbia potentially leaving if suitable offers are received.

In this particular scenario, OM has put forward a proposal for Ndidi, which is similar to what Lyon and Everton have already done. Meanwhile, Leicester is making efforts to extend the Nigerian's contract as they return to the Premier League. AS Monaco and Sevilla are interested in the player, but it may be challenging for the La Liga side to complete the deal successfully.

Another Nigerian Leicester City Player on the way out?

Aston Villa is closely monitoring Kelechi Iheanacho's situation as he prepares to depart Leicester City in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Nigeria international remains a target for Villa, as Monchi has engaged in discussions with the player's representatives regarding a potential transfer to Villa Park.

Iheanacho, 27, is set to depart from Leicester on a free transfer. He has turned down several contract extension offers before his current deal expires at the end of this month.

Villa is currently looking for a new forward to replace Jhon Duran, who Chelsea is pursuing for a potential summer transfer. Following last season’s impressive run, bettors and fans alike will be keen on The Vilians' wagering potential at bookmakers with such an intriguing addition to the final third.

Iheanacho underwent a frustrating second half of Leicester’s promotion-gaining season last term, as his on-pitch playing time was reduced. However, switching to a rival Midlands club could be the restart he needs, and the best-ranked online betting sites will certainly receive attention on his goal-scoring markets.

Victor Osimhen: From Serie A to the Premier League

Several players at Stamford Bridge's futures are currently up in the air. The club will have to make some sales this summer to stay within the Premier League's profit and sustainability regulations.

Now, however, it has been revealed that Chelsea is interested in one of the world's most exceptionally skilled strikers.

There have been ongoing rumours for quite some time about the Blues' potential acquisition of the Nigerian international. However, it seemed that their interest had waned recently, but new sources suggest that the club is quietly working on a deal for the striker and making steady progress.

Osimhen, 25, has proven himself to be a top forward in European football since his move to Napoli from Lille in the summer of 2020. With an impressive record of 76 goals in 133 appearances for the Serie A side across all competitions, he played a crucial role in securing the title during the 2022/23 campaign.

 Victor Boniface to The Hammers?

West Ham United has expressed great interest in Bayer Leverkusen's Victor Boniface and will increase their efforts to find a new primary striker once Julen Lopetegui takes over as the new head coach, succeeding David Moyes at the London Stadium.

Recent reports show West Ham has shown a strong interest in Boniface. Technical director Tim Steidten is focusing more on potential acquisitions for the frontman position as the transfer window is set to reopen in the coming weeks. These plans were put in motion shortly after Moyes' second tenure as manager came to a close.

Boniface caught the attention of West Ham due to his impressive performance, which contributed to their disappointment in winning silverware. He scored one of his 21 goals of the season during Leverkusen's Europa League quarter-final first-leg victory over West Ham, making him a strong contender to challenge Michail Antonio for a regular starting position.
