Super Eagles defender, who supports Man Utd, picks Bayern and Real Madrid stars as favourite fullbacks
Published: July 06, 2024
Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi has expressed his admiration for Bayern Munich speedster Alphonso Davies and Real Madrid star Ferland Mendy as well as revealing that he supported Manchester United while growing up.
Davies is regarded as one of the best left backs in European football and is notably known for his speed which explains why he is sometimes deployed as a left winger.
Nicknamed the roadrunner, he has been named in the FIFA FIFPro World11 once, UEFA Team of the Year once, Bundesliga Team of the Season on three occasions as well as several other individual awards.
Though not as prominent as Davies, Mendy is one of the first players on Real Madrid's team sheet and played a key role in the Spanish giants La Liga and UEFA Champions League triumph last term.
Speaking with EaglesTracker,, Onyemaechi named the Canada international and his French counterpart as the players he looked up to.
"Right now it is Alphonso Davies. I normally like to see his game whenever he is playing, whether it is Canada or Bayern Munich," he said.
"I normally like to see his game and see how he moves with the ball and how he is fast too. I normally like these kind of players"
"The second one is Mendy. The one from Real Madrid. I like this player, too. He is my favorite left back."
Also asked about the clubs he supported growing up, the fullback said: "Growing up, it was Heartland, and in Europe, it was Manchester United."
The 25-year-old has also become a key player for Portuguese side Boavista but is struggling to get regular playing time with the Super Eagles with Zaidu Sanusi being the first choice left back.
He got called up to the national team for the first time in 2022 but made his debut in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and qualifiers against São Tomé and Príncipe.
