Thomas Frank namechecks Onyeka as he insists Brentford have a good squad ahead of deadline day
Published: August 29, 2024
Speaking after his side's hard-fought 1-0 win over Colchester United in the second round of the Carabao Cup, Brentford manager Thomas Frank highlighted that he has a good squad.
The Bees set up a third round meeting with Leyton Orient, thanks to Keane Lewis-Potter's close range finish, assisted by Super Eagles-eligible winger Kevin Schade, just before halftime.
Colchester United missed a glorious chance to equalize in the 81st minute when Hákon Valdimarsson saved Jack Payne's penalty after Frank Onyeka brought down compatriot Mandela Egbo in the box.
This summer, Brentford bolstered their squad with the signings of Igor Thiago, Sepp van den Berg, Fábio Carvalho and Gustavo Nunes who were acquired from Club Brugge, Liverpool and Gremio respectively.
Brentford's marquee player Ivan Toney has not figured for the west Londoners in the new season, with reports linking the England international with possible moves to Chelsea and Al Ahli.
Thomas Frank noted two days before the close of the summer transfer window that he has a good squad and to buttress his point, the Danish football tactician profiled the players he picked in his starting lineup to face Colchester United.
Speaking to Brentford's media on Wednesday night he said: "It's a really strong squad we put out there. We were playing Hákon, Iceland international, standing for them, Ben Mee a Premier League legend. Sepp van den Berg big talent with potential, Vitaly Janelt left back, Ryan Trevitt right back.
"Then we played Frank (Onyeka), Nigerian international, Yehor Yarmolyuk U21 Ukrainian player, Fábio Carvalho big talent Portuguese U21 player, Kevin Schade been around the German national team, Damsgaard full international Denmark, and last one Keane Lewis-Potter.
"So that's a good team, we have got a good squad that I'm pleased with."
Onyeka's involvement in all three of Brentford's games so far this season suggests he is an integral part of Thomas Frank's plans for the 2024-2025 season despite speculation that he could leave the Gtech Community Stadium before the end of the summer transfer window.
