'You need to be clinical' - Rangers coach tells Dessers after missing early chance in big loss to Celtic
Published: September 01, 2024
Rangers manager Philippe Clement faced the cameras after his side's big loss to bitter rivals Celtic in a Scottish Premiership meeting at Celtic Park on Sunday and one of the topics he touched on was the early chances missed by the Light Blues with the score goalless.
Goals from Daizen Maeda and Kyogo Furuhashi and Callum McGregor secured a win for manager Brendan Rodgers' team.
Cyriel Dessers has been head and shoulders above the Rangers forwards in the new season but had a poor game by his standards against the Hoops.
Less than eight minutes into the contest, the Nigeria international had a chance to give the visitors the lead but his shot from close range wasn't clean and was easily saved by goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, although the linesman later raised his flag.
In the tenth minute, Rabbi Matondo somehow diverted his header wide after a delightful cross from James Tavernier.
Those misses would prove costly as Celtic broke the deadlock through Daizen Maeda in the 17th minute before Kyogo Furuhashi doubled the advantage at minute 40 to all but end the game as a contest.
Speaking to reporters post-match, Clement namechecked Dessers as he expressed disappointment in his players' failure to capitalize on scoring opportunities early in the game.
"We started the game really well, we had the best of the ball in the first ten minutes, got two really good opportunities, with Cyriel coming free in front of goal and with Rabbi's free header there," Clement said.
"So you need to be clinical in those games, and to come in front it changes the momentum. It would have helped the team a lot to go in front there."
Shortly after the interval, Dessers was presented with another chance to score his sixth goal of the season after Ross McCausland won possession but he fired straight at the Celtic goalkeeper.
