Former Everton star praises Dessers for vital intervention during Rangers 1-0 win against Dundee United
Published: September 16, 2024
Former Everton midfielder James McFadden was impressed with Cyriel Dessers’ defensive contribution in Glasgow Rangers’ 1-0 win over Dundee United at the Tannadice Park today.
The Super Eagles striker wasn't on the scoresheet but created the assist for the only goal of the clash, flicking the ball to Tom Lawrence in the 7th minute, and the Welsh forward slotted the ball home.
It was his defensive contribution that got McFadden attention which helped Rangers record another clean sheet after losing to Celtic in the Old Firm Derby.
In the 28th minute of the game, Dessers made a defensive header to help the Light Blues preserve their lead.
This impressed McFadden who didn't hide his emotion while on commentary duty with Sky Sports during the game.
"It’s a tremendous header, it really had to be made, from Cyriel Dessers. It’s something that Dundee United, if you look at their team, big, aggressive players to go and attack it, it was an opportunity for them, " he told Sky Sports via Ibrox News.
“I have to say it was tremendous defending from Cyriel Dessers… it’d be easy for Dessers, being a forward, to switch off but he doesn’t. It’s a vital intervention."
The former Scottish midfielder’s assessment of Dessers also reflected on his defensive stats during the fixture.
According to Sofascore, the Belgiam-born forward made five ground duels and won three, lost just one of the aerial duels that he was involved in and made one clearance.
The 29-year-old had scored three goals and recorded an assist in the opening Scottish Premiership games played so far, a stark contrast to what happened last season when he didn't get on the scoresheet until matchday six.
