Super Eagles duo Boniface and Onyeka named in German Bundesliga Team of the Week
Published: September 16, 2024
Super Eagles duo Victor Boniface and Frank Onyeka have been rewarded for their impressive displays for Bayer Leverkusen and Augsburg respectively, by being named in Whoscored's German Bundesliga Team of the Week.
Boniface helped Bayer Leverkusen return to winning ways after losing to RB Leipzig in the last matchday, beating Kevin Akpoguma's TSG Hoffenheim 4-1 on Saturday.
The 23-year-old helped Xabi Alonso's side open the scoring by assisting Martin Terrier before giving them a two-goal cushion at the half-hour mark to open his goalscoring account for the season.
Before his substitution in the 86th minute, he grabbed his brace with a left-footed shot, courtesy of Jeremie Frimpong's assist.
It was the third time the Nigerian striker would register three-goal involvement in a game since the start of last season with only Serhou Guirassy and Harry Kane doing that more often than him within that period.
Similarly, Onyeka excelled for Augsburg in their 3-1 win over FC St.Pauli at WWK Arena on Sunday afternoon.
The Brentford loanee didn't start any of the Super Eagles' 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda but was handed a start by Augsburg head coach Jess Thorup, thereby making his debut for the club.
Onyeka had a hand in Augsburg's second goal of the game, setting up Phillip Tietz on the counter to double the lead for the home side.
