Chelsea boss confirms two Nigerian youngsters will be named in squad for Carabao Cup clash v Barrow
Published: September 23, 2024
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Nigerian youngsters Carney Chukwuemeka and Tyrique George will be named in the matchday squad for his side's third-round Carabao Cup fixture against Barrow at Stamford Bridge tomorrow.
The Blues came close to winning the title last season, losing narrowly to Liverpool and will be seeking to make amends, starting with a victory over the League Two table toppers.
The Premier League giants are expected to make a host of changes to the team that started in the victory over West Ham United over the weekend and Chukwuemeka and George might be among the players to benefit.
Chukwuemeka is yet to make the matchday squad this term, with Enzo Fernández, Kieran Dewsbury-Hall, and Roméo Lavia all ahead of him in the pecking order.
George has made one appearance, coming on as a substitute in the second leg of the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers against Servette and could now be set to feature for the second time.
Speaking ahead of tomorrow's clash, Maresca was asked about the possibility of involving the two Nigeria-eligible players, Ben Chilwell and Josh Acheampong; Maresca confirmed that they would be named in the matchday squad.
As quoted by Football.London, the Italian tactician said: "The ones you just mentioned are going to be in the squad for tomorrow.
"Some of them, we will see if they start from the beginning. But if not, they are all going to be on the bench and hopefully we can give them some moments."
With the hectic scheduling of games, Maresca will be forced to make changes to his squad, paving room for fringe players to get some minutes.
