Brentford forward no longer eligible to represent Nigeria after cap-tying appearance for Germany
Published: October 14, 2024
Bentford forward Kevin Schade is now ineligible to represent Nigeria on the international stage after featuring in a cap-tying game for Germany on Monday night, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Last week, Schade was handed a late call-up by manager Julian Nagelsmann as a replacement for Eintracht Frankfurt central defender Robin Koch who withdrew from Germany's squad due to a hip injury he suffered in the last game before the international break.
Prior to his call-up for the UEFA Nations League matches in October, the 22-year-old played in three matches for Germany, but was still eligible to make a switch to Nigeria, where his father originally hails from.
After he was not utilized off the bench in Germany's 2-1 win against Bosnia-Herzegovina last Friday, Schade became permanently cap-tied to his country of birth after replacing Aleksandar Pavlović in the 77th minute of a 1-0 win versus the Netherlands tonight.
He was eligible to apply for a change of association prior to his competitive debut for the four-time world champions.
March 25, 2023 was his debut for Germany in a 2-0 win versus Peru, and he played in two further games against Belgium and Japan but those games did not cap-tie him to Die Nationalmannschaft as they were friendlies.
Schade has added his name to the growing list of dual-national players who have opted to represent Germany over Nigeria, following in the footsteps of Karim Adeyemi, Dennis Aogo, Jamal Musiala, Lukas Nmecha, Patrick Owomoyela and Sidney Sam.
Nigeria's forward line is stacked with talented players aged 25 or younger, including Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, Terem Moffi, Nathan Tella, and Samuel Chukwueze, so Schade won't be a big miss.
