'A big miss' - Sunderland's DR Congo midfielder Sadiki admits Osimhen's injury changed the game

DR Congo and Sunderland midfielder Noah Sadiki has stated that the injury to Nigeria forward Victor Osimhen proved to be an advantage for his team, while also confirming that the Congolese squad had practiced penalties ahead of the match.

Speaking after the contest, Sadiki acknowledged the influence Osimhen holds for the Super Eagles and how his absence changed the dynamics of the game.

He noted that Nigeria still possessed capable attacking players, but losing their leading striker represented a major setback.

"We know Osimhen is a big player and if you remove him out of the team, he's a big miss in front even though they have qualities in front as well,” Sadiki told reporters in the mixed zone post-match.

He continued by explaining that the team recognized the significance of Osimhen’s injury as events unfolded.

"So we knew he was their star player and if he was out it would be easier, it would be another game,” he added.

Sadiki also confirmed that DR Congo came into the match fully prepared for the possibility of a penalty shootout, adding that he had not yet checked his phone for congratulatory messages from his Sunderland teammates.

"Of course, we practiced penalties. Not yet. I have not yet checked my phone. I want to enjoy the win first."

Frank Onyeka's third-minute opener was cancelled out by Meschack Elia, sending the tie into extra time.

With no winner after 120 minutes, the contest was decided by a penalty shootout.

The Democratic Republic of Congo triumphed after Super Eagles trio Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon and Semi Ajayi failed to convert their spot-kicks.
