Official: Nigeria international striker joins NWSL side Kansas City Current, loaned out to Carolina Ascent
Published: November 15, 2024With a statement on their official website, USL Super League outfit Carolina Ascent have announced the signing of Nigeria international striker Opeyemi Ajakaye.
Ajakaye, who is also a Nigeria youth international, has joined Carolina Ascent on loan from National Women's Soccer League club Kansas City Current for the remainder of the 2024 fall schedule.
Allnigeriasoccer.com exclusively reported exactly six weeks ago that Ajakaye had already signed a deal with an unnamed club in the United States of America, having ended her association with Spanish Primera División de la Liga de Fútbol Femenino side, Madrid CFF.
The 18-year-old represented Nigeria at the 2024 Fifa U20 Women's World Cup in Venezuela and was one of the standout players for the Flamingos at the Fifa U17 Women's World Cup in 2022.
Ajakaye earned her first appearance for the Super Falcons during the Paris 2024 Olympics qualifier against Ethiopia in October 2023, coming on as a substitute in the dying moments of the match at the Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa.
In her first words as a player of Carolina Ascent, Ajakaye told the club's official webpage: "I am very happy to be part of this amazing team, and I know Carolina Ascent FC is going to help me become what I want to be in life, to help my performance and grow my career.
"I am looking forward to becoming a champion in the league and helping the team carry a trophy. I pray I have the chance to play and showcase myself to the world."
It remains to be seen whether the Kansas City Current loanee will make her debut for Carolina Ascent when they face Tampa Bay Sun in gameweek fifteen of the USL Super League on November 17.
