'Slow and ponderous' - Ex-Besiktas midfielder suggests Osimhen prefers Icardi partnership to Mertens
Published: December 04, 2024Former Besiktas midfielder Sinan Engin has shared his thoughts on Victor Osimhen’s favoured striking partnership, suggesting that the Nigerian forward would prefer a partnership with Mauro Icardi rather than Dries Mertens.
He made the comments during an interview on the Assist Analysis YouTube channel via habersarikirmizi, where he examined Osimhen's performance since joining Galatasaray on loan from Napoli.
Osimhen has been in sensational form, netting nine goals and providing five assists in just 12 appearances across all competitions.
His previous partnership with Icardi was particularly fruitful before the Argentine striker suffered a season-ending injury.
Engin emphasized that Osimhen feels more at ease with Icardi, stating, "Mauro Icardi is a real striker. If Icardi is there, Victor Osimen will be comfortable."
In contrast, Engin criticized the combination of Osimhen and Mertens, describing it as "slow and ponderous".
He argued that this duo could render Galatasaray’s style of play predictable, making it easier for opponents to defend against them.
"Victor Osimhen and Dries Mertens duo are slow and ponderous. What Galatasaray players will do is simple, they will go down to the side and pass the ball to Victor Osimhen, but they cannot always do that," Engin explained.
Despite the absence of Icardi, Osimhen has continued to shine for Galatasaray, showcasing his ability to adapt and maintain his impressive scoring record.
