Galatasaray's most successful transfer this season: Turkish commentator claims it's not Osimhen
Published: January 08, 2025
Respected Turkish football commentator Ali Ece has made a surprising choice for Galatasaray's best signing of the summer transfer window of 2024.
The Turkish Super Lig champions strengthened the squad with the signings of Gabriel Sara (Norwich City), Elias Jelert (FC Copenhagen), Roland Sallai (SC Freiburg), Ismail Jakobs (Monaco) and Ali Efe Çördek (Bulvarspor).
In addition, the then-African Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen, along with Chelsea alums Hakim Ziyech and Michy Batshuayi, were brought in.
The transfers have paid dividends as Galatasaray are topping the Super Lig standings and have emerged as one of the favorites to win the Europa League.
Arguably the most marquee signing by a Turkish club in recent seasons, Osimhen has taken the Super Lig by storm since landing in Istanbul from Naples in September 2024.
In twelve matches in the division, the Super Eagles striker has tallied ten goals and has three assists to his name.
However, Ece reckons that club-record signing Gabriel Sara is Galatasaray's most successful transfer this season in terms of the impact he has made since his arrival.
The midfielder, signed from Norwich City for a record 18 million euros, broke the previous transfer record of 17 million euros held by Mario Jardel from the 2000-2001 season.
Speaking on the Vole YouTube channel, via habersarikirmizi.com, he stated: "Gabriel Sara is Galatasaray's most successful transfer this season. Osimhen came on loan. Osimhen, of course, has superstar status, but the most successful transfer is Sara.
"Sara, it was a risky move by Turkish standards. They talked by heart, without watching the man."
With nine goal involvements this term, Sara has achieved half of Osimhen's tally, even though the Nigerian has featured in eight fewer games.
