The real reason Osimhen was left out of Galatasaray's matchday squad against Basaksehir FK
Published: January 09, 2025
Victor Osimhen was a surprising omission from Galatasaray's matchday squad against Basaksehir FK in a Turkish Cup clash held at Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi RAMS Park on Wednesday evening.
Amid speculation that the Napoli loanee was rested for the game, allnigeriasoccer.com can confirm that the former African Footballer of the Year was not available for selection due to fitness issues.
Osimhen was not included in the squad for the game as he is recuperating from a fever.
All things being equal, the Nigeria international is expected to resume training at Galatasaray on Thursday ahead of the trip to Basaksehir FK for the nineteenth round of matches in the Turkish Super Lig.
Without their marquee signing in the summer transfer window of 2024, Galatasaray struggled in attack and had to come from behind twice to salvage a draw.
Two central defenders bailed them out, with former Tottenham Hotspur man Davinson Sánchez heading home in the 51st minute and Abdülkerim Bardakcı tapping in the equalizer with sixteen minutes remaining.
In the absence of Osimhen, ex-Chelsea star Michy Batshuayi spearheaded the attack but struggled to impress, firing blanks in ninety minutes of action.
Osimhen has been in sensational form for Galatasaray this season, scoring 10 goals and providing 3 assists in 12 league matches.
Additionally, the 26-year-old has been involved in 5 goals (3 goals, 2 assists) in four Europa League appearances, showcasing his consistency.
