'It's not just his goals' - West Brom interim coach rues absence of top scorer Josh Maja
Published: January 17, 2025
West Brom's interim head coach Chris Brunt has expressed his concern about the absence of top scorer Josh Maja due to injury.
Maja, who has netted 12 league goals this season, is set to undergo surgery on a lower leg injury and will be out of action for several weeks.
The 26-year-old striker's absence is a significant blow to West Brom's chances of success in the Championship.
Maja has been in excellent form this season, scoring crucial goals and providing a focal point for the team's attack.
His injury has come at a difficult time for West Brom, who are still searching for a new permanent head coach.
The Baggies have been without a permanent head coach since Carlos Corberan's departure on Christmas Eve.
Despite this, the team has managed to pick up five points out of a possible 12 under the caretaker management team of Chris Brunt, Damia Abella, and Boaz Myhill.
However, the absence of Maja's goalscoring threat will make it even more challenging for the team to achieve success.
"It's not just his goals, it's his overall play too," Brunt told BBC Radio WM.
"After missing last year with two bad ankle injuries, he's been in great form for us this season.
"It's been well documented that we haven't scored enough goals this season anyway, and to be without him now is a massive blow."
Maja's injury is not only a blow to West Brom but also to the player himself.
The Nigerian international has worked hard to regain his fitness after missing last season with ankle injuries.
His form this season has been impressive, and he will be eager to get back on the pitch as soon as possible.
West Brom will be hoping to have Maja back in contention during the spring. Until then, the team will have to find a way to cope without their top scorer.
With a crucial game against Stoke City coming up on Saturday, Brunt and his team will be working hard to find a solution to the problem posed by Maja's injury.
