Lille striker Akpom joins Super Eagles stars Osimhen, Moffi, Simon in scoring on Ligue 1 debut
Published: February 09, 2025
Nigerian striker Chuba Akpom made a memorable Ligue 1 debut for Lille, scoring a late goal in their 2-1 loss to Le Havre.
And in doing so, the Hale End Academy graduate followed in the footsteps of Super Eagles forwards Victor Osimhen, Moses Simon and Terem Moffi, who scored on their Ligue 1 debuts for Lille, Nantes and FC Lorient respectively.
Despite the defeat, Akpom's performance was a bright spot for Lille, who missed out on a golden opportunity to climb onto the Champions League places.
Akpom, who joined The Mastiffs on a loan deal with an option to buy from Ajax Amsterdam, came on as a second-half substitute and made an instant impact.
His goal in the 97th minute, reduced the deficit to 2-1 against a Le Havre side who are now two points above Montpellier at the wrong end of the Ligue 1 table.
Although Lille dominated possession and created several scoring opportunities, they were unable to capitalize on their chances.
Le Havre, on the other hand, were more clinical in front of goal, scoring two through Soumaré and Issa Soumaré.
Akpom's debut goal was a consolation for Lille, who were left to rue their missed opportunities.
The Nigerian striker's performance, however, will give Lille fans hope that he can make a significant impact in the remaining games of the season.
Lille's next match is against Rennes on February 16, and Akpom will be looking to build on his debut performance.
The 29-year-old striker's move to Lille was seen as a fresh start after struggling to establish himself at Ajax.
Saturday's goal against Le Havre suggests that he is ready to make the most of his opportunity in France.
