Former West Ham winger urges George to challenge Sancho for starting spot at Chelsea
Published: February 09, 2025
Former West Ham winger Matt Jarvis has encouraged Chelsea youngster Tyrique George to compete with Jadon Sancho for a place in the first team following the latter's underwhelming performance in Chelsea's 2-1 loss to Brighton in the FA Cup.
George was introduced as a second-half substitute, replacing Sancho with 16 minutes left as Chelsea searched for an equalizer.
Despite his brief time on the pitch, the 19-year-old managed an attempt on goal and completed all his passes.
In contrast, Sancho struggled to make an impact, failing to register a shot and completing 93.8% of his passes.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Jarvis expressed his disappointment with Sancho's lack of urgency and urged George to take advantage of his opportunities.
"Joel Veltman has been on a yellow card since the first half but Jadon Sancho has not been able to take him on. He's turned back so many times and that's probably why Enzo Maresca has made that substitution."
"I am really interested to see how Tyrique George does. This is a great chance for him to get into this team as Sancho is not really lighting up at the moment."
George has been in fine form for Chelsea's academy and first team this season.
In the Premier League 2, he has registered one goal and five assists, while in the FA Cup, he has assisted twice in two appearances for the senior side.
With Sancho struggling to deliver consistently, George's impressive performances could see him earn more first-team opportunities under Maresca in the coming weeks.
