'We have problems' - Southampton coach hints at Aribo playing centre-back against Chelsea
Published: February 25, 2025
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Southampton manager Ivan Juric has hinted at the possibility of Nigerian midfielder Joe Aribo featuring as a left-sided centre-back in their upcoming Premier League clash against Chelsea.
Aribo previously played in the same role during Southampton’s 4-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion at St Mary’s Stadium last Saturday, and the 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
The Nigerian international has been a crucial figure for the Saints this season, contributing in both defense and attack as the club battles to avoid relegation to the Championship.
The 28-year-old midfielder has scored three league goals in 25 appearances, solidifying his place as a key member of Juric’s squad.
Speaking ahead of the Chelsea match, Juric acknowledged the defensive challenges facing his team and the possibility of deploying Aribo in the backline.
"I think this is the way. I'm sure watching all the middle teams, small teams, this is the way to play," Juric was quoted as saying by Daily Echo.
"It's not easy for the players because they change the style of play. Even for characteristics, it's not easy but I think this is the way.
"Of course, we have problems with the left centre-back. Now, without Jan Bednarek, Taylor Harwood-Bellis will be on the team. If he does training today and comes to the bench then we have problems. We have to play with Wellington or with Joe Aribo."
Aribo has played in four different positions for Southampton this season, featuring as a central defender, as well as in defensive, central, and attacking midfield roles.
He hoped that his versatility and consistent performances for Southampton could earn him a recall to the Super Eagles squad ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming fixtures against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
Southampton will travel to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night to take on a struggling Chelsea side in the Premier League.
