Super Eagles midfielder Ndidi endures tough night as Leicester City fall to West Ham
Published: February 27, 2025
Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi had a frustrating outing as Leicester City suffered a 2-0 defeat to West Ham United in their Premier League clash at the London Stadium on Thursday night.
Ndidi, who started in midfield for the Foxes, was involved in key moments of the game but was unable to influence the outcome as his side struggled to break down a resolute West Ham defense.
The Nigerian international came close to scoring in the 61st minute when he connected with a free-kick delivery, but his header was well off target.
Earlier in the match, he attempted a lofted cross into the box, but the Hammers’ defense swiftly cleared the danger.
West Ham took the lead in the 21st minute through Tomas Soucek, who capitalized on a rebound to slot home from close range.
Leicester's problems worsened in the 43rd minute when Jannik Vestergaard inadvertently deflected a shot into his own net, doubling the hosts' advantage before halftime.
Ndidi tried to rally his team after the break, making several forward runs and pressing high, but the Foxes lacked cutting edge in attack.
His effort in the 73rd minute—a shot from distance—failed to trouble West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.
Leicester manager Ruud van Nistelrooy made multiple substitutions in an attempt to turn the game around, but the Hammers controlled possession and held firm defensively to secure all three points.
Ndidi’s role in midfield was crucial in Leicester's attempts to regain control, but West Ham’s organization made it difficult for the visitors to create clear chances.
The defeat leaves Leicester in a precarious position as they continue to battle for survival in the Premier League.
Ndidi and his teammates will need to regroup quickly as they prepare for their next fixture in a bid to avoid further setbacks in their campaign.
