Made in Hale End: Nwaneri scores in Arsenal's 7-1 rout of PSV, assisted by Lewis-Skelly
Published: March 04, 2025
Arsenal's rising star, Ethan Nwaneri, etched his name into the history books during their dominant 7-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven in the first leg of the 2025 UEFA Champions League Round of 16.
At just 17 years and 346 days old, Nwaneri became the second-youngest Arsenal player ever to appear in a Champions League knockout match, following in the footsteps of club legend Cesc Fàbregas.
Nwaneri’s historic moment didn’t stop there. He also became the third-youngest player to score in a Champions League knockout tie, joining an exclusive list that includes Bojan Krkić and Jude Bellingham.
The teenager’s magic moment came in the 21st minute, when he combined with fellow Hale End Academy product, 18-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly to score a stunning goal that put the Gunners 2-0 up.
The assist from Lewis-Skelly, alongside Nwaneri’s composed finish, highlighted their growing partnership and added to the excitement surrounding their young, dynamic duo.
Arsenal's other scorers were Jurrien Timber, Mikel Merino, Martin Ødegaard (2) Leandro Trossard and Riccardo Calafiori, while Noa Lang netted a consolation for the Dutch outfit.
Nwaneri’s achievement is a significant milestone in his rapid rise through the ranks at Arsenal.
Manager Mikel Arteta has often praised the midfielder’s maturity and skill, drawing comparisons to the club's former prodigy Jack Wilshere.
With each match, Nwaneri continues to prove his potential, and his involvement in such an important Champions League tie solidifies his place as one of the brightest young talents in European football.
As the Gunners head into the second leg with a commanding lead, Nwaneri's performance serves as a reminder of the exceptional talent emerging from Arsenal’s youth system, with fans eagerly anticipating more from the club’s new star.
