Man Utd's all-time top scorer has his say on whether Nwaneri should be included in England squad
Published: March 05, 2025
Manchester United's all-time top scorer Wayne Rooney has voiced his support for Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri to be included in England’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, arguing that the 17-year-old has shown more than some recent call-ups.
Nwaneri has enjoyed a breakthrough season with Arsenal, making 27 appearances across all competitions and stepping up in the absence of Bukayo Saka.
His impressive performances, including a standout display in Arsenal’s 7-1 demolition of PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, have sparked debate over whether he deserves a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for England’s matches against Albania and Latvia.
Speaking on Amazon Prime Sport, via Football Insider, Rooney shared his thoughts on Nwaneri’s potential inclusion.
“I think he is definitely [ready],” Rooney said. "And I think what we’ve seen over the last couple of years with England is some players maybe getting the opportunity to play for England who maybe haven’t deserved the opportunity."
Rooney continued, highlighting Nwaneri’s qualities that make him a strong candidate for an England call-up.
"That’s my opinion on that. But I think Nwaneri, what he’s doing at the minute—he’s showing he’s got the temperament, he’s got the right attitude, and he’s got the ability to be in and around that squad.
"So if he keeps doing what he’s doing, I’m sure he’ll have a great chance."
Nwaneri’s development has been rapid since making history in 2022 as Arsenal’s youngest-ever Premier League debutant at just 15 years old.
This season, he has grown into a key squad member under Mikel Arteta, registering eight goals and one assist while providing much-needed depth in Arsenal’s attack.
While a senior England call-up would be a significant milestone for Nwaneri, it also presents a challenge for Arsenal.
The club has suffered from injuries in attack this season, and with crucial Premier League and Champions League fixtures ahead, Arteta may have concerns over his young star taking on additional international responsibilities.
With the squad announcement looming, all eyes will be on Tuchel’s decision. Whether Nwaneri makes the cut or not, his performances this season have already put him firmly on England’s radar.
