2026 WCQs: Nigeria captain Ahmed Musa picks most important game between Rwanda and Zimbabwe
Published: March 10, 2025
Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has urged Nigerians to rally behind the team as they prepare for their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
Speaking to journalists before a Nigeria Premier Football League match between Kwara United and Kano Pillars in Ilorin, Musa emphasized the importance of qualification, warning that missing another World Cup would be a huge setback for the country.
Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after a disappointing two-legged playoff against Ghana, and Musa is determined to ensure history does not repeat itself.
"We don't have to miss another World Cup. I am telling you it would be a big disaster for we the players and everybody. We would try our best," Musa assured.
The Super Eagles captain also stressed the importance of securing victory in Kigali, stating that a win against Rwanda could be the turning point for Nigeria's qualification campaign.
"I think the important game is in Rwanda. If we have the three points in that game it would be the turning point," he said.
Musa concluded by calling on Nigerians to support the team as they fight to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
"I want every Nigerian to support the Super Eagles and Insha Allah (by the Grace of God) we would get the necessary result," he added.
Nigeria currently sits in fifth place in Group C with just three points, having failed to win any of their four qualifying matches.
The Super Eagles are four points behind group leaders Rwanda and must win the majority of their remaining six games to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle has named a 39-man provisional squad for the upcoming fixtures, including Musa.
Nigeria will first travel to Kigali to face Rwanda before hosting Zimbabwe in Uyo for their second match of the qualifiers.
