'Anyone who can muscle Calvin Bassey off the ball' - Celtic legend in awe of Chido Obi's physicality
Published: March 10, 2025
Celtic legend Chris Sutton has heaped praise on Manchester United youngster Chido Obi, marveling at the teenager's impressive physicality despite his young age.
Obi, who joined United from Arsenal last summer, has been making waves in the club's youth system.
His performances have not gone unnoticed, as first-team manager Rúben Amorim handed him his Premier League debut against Tottenham Hotspur.
The 17-year-old also featured in United's FA Cup clash against Fulham, where he was introduced in the second half and showcased glimpses of his talent.
Sutton, writing in his column for the Daily Mail, expressed admiration for Obi-Martin's strength and physical attributes.
"There is no doubt that Obi seems a little bit raw, which is normal at 17 with only 73 minutes of first team action to his name so far, but he looks extremely physical," Sutton noted.
The Celtic icon further highlighted Obi's physical battle with Calvin Bassey during the FA Cup clash, stating that it demonstrated his readiness to compete at the top level.
"The one thing for me at 17 was that I was still developing physically but Obi, anyone who can muscle Calvin Bassey off the ball as he did, you take your hat off too.
"Physically he does look like he is there and then he also looks explosive."
Sutton also highlighted the young forward's potential to thrive at the highest level, despite Manchester United's struggles this season.
"There are certain elements of his game I am sure he is working hard on, but to go in at Premier League level, at the top level, and be able to cope physically is a big, big deal.
“He coped very well in that aspect. Now the challenge to him is to refine his skills as much as anything.
"He looks fearless to me. That's what you get from young players because he hasn't been part of this struggling team."
Despite United's struggles in attack, Obi-Martin's emergence offers a glimmer of hope for Amorim, who will be keen to nurture the teenage sensation ahead of next season.
