'We are aware' - Troost-Ekong assures Super Eagles ready for Musona, Zimbabwe attacking threat
Published: March 25, 2025
Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong has assured fans that the team is well aware of the attacking threat posed by Zimbabwe’s Knowledge Musona and other key players ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo.
Troost-Ekong, who played the full 90 minutes in Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Rwanda, emphasized that the team is well-prepared for the challenge posed by the Warriors.
Musona, a veteran forward, was recalled to the Zimbabwean squad by head coach Michael Nees and justified his selection with a goal in their 2-2 draw against Benin.
Despite his proven quality, Ekong made it clear that Nigeria is not focusing on any single player but rather preparing for the team as a whole.
"Yes we are aware. We have watched some videos of them. There are some players I know that I have played against in my club career," Ekong said in his pre-match press conference.
However, he stressed the importance of focusing on Nigeria’s own strengths rather than individual opponents.
"Every team in Africa is good. So it comes back to the point where we focus on ourselves. We know how they play and prepare for them tactically."
"We don't focus on individuals, like we don't focus on individuals in our team too but we all try to prepare as well as we can for them."
The former Watford defender also highlighted what makes head coach Eric Chelle stand out compared to previous Super Eagles coaches.
He praised Chelle’s tactical acumen, commitment, and strong desire to win matches.
"We have had some great coaches. I have been very lucky to be part of some great teams in the last ten years."
"Looking ahead now, I think we have the right person who is just as ambitious as the group. He has the idea tactically, motivation, and hunger like all of us Nigerians."
Chelle will be hoping to lead Nigeria to another victory in Uyo, further strengthening their chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
