'We're in a quarterfinal' - Rangers' Balogun urges teammates to focus on UEL clash, forget domestic form
Published: April 10, 2025
Leon Balogun was the Rangers player chosen to attend Wednesday's pre-match press conference, an indication that the central defender is in contention to be named in the starting lineup in the UEFA Europa League quarterfinal clash against Athletic Club at Ibrox.
The Nigeria international watched on from the bench as Rangers were beaten 2-0 by Hibernian in a Scottish Premiership match on Saturday, April 5, their fifth consecutive home loss at Ibrox.
The Light Blues have secured impressive wins against Malmo, FCSB, OGC Nice and Fenerbahce in this season's Europa League and were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Speaking ahead of the game against the Spanish opponents, Balogun has urged focus and composure, stressing the importance of separating European ambitions from domestic form.
In quotes relayed by Rangers' official website, he said: "We were all fairly clear about the fact we are now in a quarter-final.
"It is separate from what’s happening domestically, and we need to focus on that. There is a massive opportunity for the players and the club."
Balogun acknowledged that recent days in training had been positive and upbeat, with the squad fully aware of the opportunity that lies ahead.
"There is a massive opportunity for the players and the club. The last two days were pretty positive; everyone is aware of the domestic side, but we can focus on that after tomorrow night again."
Facing a technically sharp and dangerous Athletic Club team, Balogun is well aware of the test that awaits.
"It'll be a challenge tomorrow as they have some real good quality [in attack], but this is what you embrace."
Balogun was a key member of the Rangers squad that reached the final of the 2022 Europa League, though he was an unused substitute in the showpiece against Eintracht Frankfurt.
