Onetime Chelsea midfielder Anjorin has a chance to impress Eric Chelle this afternoon
Published: April 20, 2025
Nigerian midfielder Faustino Anjorin is set to be included in Empoli's gameday squad on Sunday afternoon when they take on Venezia in a Serie A encounter at Stadio Carlo Castellani – Computer Gross Arena.
The Chelsea academy graduate is on the long list of players being targeted by Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle ahead of this summer's Unity Cup in London and the resumption of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
However, for more than two months, the Malian tactician has been unable to monitor the former England youth international as the Empoli star was recovering from a thigh injury.
Today, he has a chance to show off to Chelle, with Empoli manager Roberto D'Aversa confirming at the pre-match press conference on Saturday that Anjorin will be involved in some capacity against Venezia.
Last week, Anjorin began training individually before later joining his Empoli teammates in full training.
It is all but confirmed that he will not be named in the starting lineup against Venezia, given that he has not played competitively for exactly eleven weeks, with his last appearance coming against Juventus on February 2.
Although Anjorin is working his way back to full fitness, Roberto D'Aversa has decided to rush him back from injury because Empoli have been struggling for form in the Serie A, with no wins in seventeen straight games.
The 23-year-old has been one of the few bright sparks for Empoli, in what has been a turbulent season, providing three assists in seventeen games before his spell on the sidelines.
Anjorin is eager to represent the Super Eagles but has to file his one-time switch paperwork with Fifa to change his national team eligibility from England to Nigeria.
