After Burnley's win over Sheffield United, Nigerian duo promoted to the PL with Leeds United
Published: April 21, 2025
Nigerian duo Isaac Schmidt and James Debayo are celebrating promotion to the Premier League with Championship table toppers Leeds United.
Burnley's 2-1 win over Sheffield United on Monday evening at Turf Moor ensured that both the Clarets and the Whites have secured promotion back to the English top flight with two games to spare.
Leeds United thrashed Stoke City 6-0 in their earlier match on Monday, making promotion virtually certain.
They can now clinch the Championship title with wins over Bristol City and Plymouth Argyle in their final two games—unless an unlikely set of results changes everything.
Winning both would also take Leeds to 100 points, a total Burnley could still match with two more victories of their own.
Isaac Schmidt, signed from Swiss club FC St. Gallen on deadline day last summer, got on the pitch 12 times in the Championship—but all his appearances came as a sub.
Despite being named in 24 matchday squads this season, teenage defender James Debayo made one appearance in the Championship and remained on the bench for the other 23 matches.
James' sibling, Josh Debayo trained with the Golden Eaglets before the 2013 Fifa U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
