Racing Genk, FC Sion monitor Flying Eagles at U20 Afcon: Six players who have caught the eye
Published: May 09, 2025
European interest in Nigeria’s next generation of football stars is growing, with scouts from Racing Genk and FC Sion currently monitoring the Flying Eagles at the 2025 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Romain Albaric, a scout for Swiss top-flight side FC Sion, and Bennard Yao Kumordzi, representing Belgian Pro League outfit Racing Genk, have both been spotted in Cairo watching matches at the tournament, including those involving the Flying Eagles.
Their presence signals strong European interest in the Nigerian squad, which has progressed to the quarterfinal stage.
So far, several players have stood out for Aliyu Zubairu’s team.
Centre-back and captain Daniel Bameyi has delivered assured performances at the heart of defence, combining leadership with composure and earning a Man of the Match award.
Midfielder Auwal Ibrahim, another Man of the Match recipient, has shown great dynamism in central midfield, contributing defensively and orchestrating play.
Other standout performers include Simon Cletus, who impressed with his sharp passing and control in the draw against Kenya, and Kparobo Arierhi, whose speed and creativity on the wings have caused consistent problems for defenders.
Goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt and combative midfielder Israel Ayuma have also been solid contributors.
Nigeria will face defending champions Senegal in the quarterfinals, a clash that is expected to attract even more attention from talent spotters.
With scouts from clubs known for developing African talent in attendance, a strong showing in the knockout stages could be the gateway to European opportunities for several Flying Eagles players.
The tournament is proving to be not only a continental showcase, but also a potential launchpad for future stars of the Nigerian national team.
