Liverpool youth product who wants to play for Nigeria released by Sheffield Wednesday
Published: May 15, 2025
Following the completion of the 2024-2025 season, Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday have announced the retained and released list.
The Owls have confirmed that Liverpool academy product Michael Ihiekwe is set to move on to pastures new upon the expiry of his contract on June 30, 2025.
Ihiekwe has been released by Sheffield Wednesday three years after joining the club as a free agent, after running out of contract at Rotherham United, where he was teammates with Nigeria international Semi Ajayi.
Born in Liverpool 32 years ago, the experienced centre-back is departing Sheffield Wednesday with 82 appearances under his belt, scoring three goals and producing three assists.
Ihiekwe has committed his international future to Nigeria and is hoping to get a call-up to the Super Eagles before hanging up his boots.
On his curriculum vitae, he lists Wolverhampton Wanderers, Cheltenham Town, Tranmere Rovers and Accrington Stanley among his previous clubs.
He had an injury plagued season, limiting his appearances to twenty-five in all competitions.
Meanwhile, another central defender of Nigeria descent, Akin Famewo has also been released by Sheffield Wednesday.
A product of the Luton Town academy, Famewo had stops at Grimsby Town, Norwich City, St Mirren and Charlton Athletic before landing at Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 2022.
The 26-year-old accumulated 73 appearances as an Owls player, scoring one goal and registering two assists.
