Confirmed: 2015 U20 Afcon-winning midfielder signs new deal with MLS club FC Cincinnati
Published: May 15, 2025
With a statement on the official website, Major League Soccer club FC Cincinnati have announced that 2015 Africa U20 Cup of Nations-winning midfielder Obinna Nwobodo has signed a contract extension.
Nwobodo was an influential member of the last Flying Eagles squad to win the U20 Afcon, starting four of the team's five matches during the tournament in Senegal.
The FC Inter Enugu product has committed his future to FC Cincinnati by putting pen to paper on a contract extension through 2027 with a club option for 2028.
Now in his fourth season with FC Cincinnati, the 28-year-old joined the club in April 2022 from Turkish outfit Goztepe as a Designated Player.
Since his arrival at FC Cincinnati, Nwobodo has two goals and seven assists in 117 matches, and helped the Orange and Blue win the 2023 Supporters' Shield.
FC Cincinnati has become the club where the defensive midfielder has featured most frequently, surpassing all others since he began his professional career.
Commenting on Nwobodo's new deal, Chris Albright, FC Cincinnati General Manager said: "Since arriving three years ago, Obi has been a fundamental part of our success.
"He’s relentless in how he approaches the game, on and off the field, and he’s an exceptional teammate and leader for our group. We’re delighted to have Obi and his family stay in Cincinnati."
Nwobodo was the top tackler in Major League Soccer in 2023, accumulating 62 over the course of the campaign, four more than any other player.
