'A pity Osimhen won't come' - Ex-Russia CB speaks on friendly v Nigeria, laments missing stars

Retired Russia international centre-back Vladimir Granat has expressed disappointment over the absence of several key Super Eagles players ahead of the upcoming international friendly between Russia and Nigeria at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
For the internationals this summer, Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle has omitted marquee forwards Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen from his squad list.
Additionally, Premier League stars Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu will not be travelling with the Super Eagles to the Russian capital next month.
Despite the inclusion of Wilfred Ndidi, Ola Aina, William Troost-Ekong, Samuel Chukwueze, Kelechi Iheanacho and Moses Simon in the 21-man squad, Granat stressed that Nigeria won’t be lining up with their strongest XI.
Still, the Dynamo Moscow legend acknowledged the quality of the opposition, stating that the Super Eagles represent one of the most formidable sides Russia will have faced in recent times.
Speaking to Sport Express, Vladimir Granat said: "Nigeria is one of the strongest opponents in recent times. I expect a good match from our guys.
"It's a pity that such top players as Osimhen won't come. I wanted Nigeria to be in a fighting lineup. Then our guys would be able to test themselves at the level of world football.
"It's possible that the winning streak will be interrupted, but I'm counting on victory."
Russia is currently on a 17-match unbeaten run, winning 11 of those games.
Their last loss came in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Croatia, before their suspension from official tournaments.
The Russia versus Nigeria friendly will start at 1800 hours Nigerian time on June 6, 2025.
