'Had a great game' – Chelle refuses to criticise Nwabali despite near-red card v Rwanda

Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle has thrown his weight behind goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali despite criticism over his performance in Nigeria's 1-0 victory against Rwanda in Uyo on Saturday.

The Chippa United shot-stopper came under fire after narrowly escaping a red card for his aggressive and risky antics during the qualifier.

Following the performance, some fans and pundits even called for him to be cautioned ahead of Tuesday's crucial World Cup clash against South Africa.

Speaking at a press conference, Chelle praised Nwabali's display and insisted his approach was exactly what he demanded from his players.

"You know if your coach ask you to have warrior set of mind. So I am happy about his game two days ago. He had a great game and I want to him to be like that tomorrow," he said.

The Super Eagles boss urged other squad members to emulate the goalkeeper's mentality,

"He played a great game and his state of mind was perfect. For me he needs to continue that and I ask that from all my players."

Chelle will once again rely on Nwabali, who also plies his trade in South Africa, to deliver a solid performance when Nigeria face Bafana Bafana in Bloemfontein.

Victory will be vital for the Super Eagles to revive their qualification hopes for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico after a shaky start to the campaign.
