Odemwingie: Forward who snubbed Russia for Nigeria explains why he won't attend June 6 friendly
Published: May 24, 2025
Former Nigeria international Peter Odemwingie has revealed he will be unable to attend the upcoming friendly between Russia and Nigeria on June 6 at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, citing personal commitments.
Odemwingie, who was eligible to play for Russia through his Russian mother, famously chose to represent Nigeria at senior international level.
The former Lokomotiv Moscow forward earned 65 caps for the Super Eagles, featuring in two Fifa World Cups and four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
Speaking to Sport-Express, Odemwingie said: "I would love to watch this game live, but I am on a coaching course for the first two weeks of June. I hope to visit Russia in August and watch a few RPL games.”
The 43-year-old maintains close ties to Russian football following a successful spell in the Russian Premier League, particularly with Lokomotiv.
While his decision to represent Nigeria was driven by pride in his father’s homeland, Odemwingie has often acknowledged the strong personal connection he feels to Russia.
"I think the Russia–Nigeria match will be a great spectacle," he added.
The match on June 6 will be the first-ever senior-level meeting between the two nations and comes amid efforts to strengthen football ties between Russia and African countries.
With Odemwingie’s unique dual heritage and legacy in both football cultures, his absence will be noted by many fans.
Though unable to attend the game in June, Odemwingie’s planned August visit may see him return to familiar stadiums and reconnect with supporters from his Lokomotiv days.
