Explained: Why Jupiler Pro League top scorer Arokodare has not reported for Super Eagles duty
Published: May 26, 2025
Racing Genk striker Tolu Arokodare is among four players yet to report to the Super Eagles camp in London ahead of Wednesday's Unity Cup clash against Ghana’s Black Stars.
Also absent from the squad are Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, Getafe midfielder Christantus Uche and Tanzanian-based shot-stopper Amas Obasogie.
Arokodare's delayed arrival is due to club commitments as the prolific forward attended the Pro League Awards gala on Monday evening in Antwerp, where he was nominated for the prestigious Player of the Season accolade.
The 24-year-old finished third in the voting, behind Club Brugge midfielders Ardon Jashari and Hans Vanaken.
However, he did not leave empty-handed, having claimed the top scorer award after netting 21 goals in the recently concluded Jupiler Pro League campaign.
In doing so, he followed in the footsteps of compatriot Paul Onuachu, who previously claimed the honour.
The Pro League Awards, held annually after the final matchday of the playoffs, recognize standout performers as voted by players and coaches across Belgium's top flight.
Meanwhile, the Super Eagles held their first training session on Monday at the Hanwell Town FC facility, with head coach Eric Chelle overseeing preparations.
Arokodare will be playing catch-up upon his arrival, with fellow forwards Kelechi Iheanacho, Ahmed Musa and Sikiru Alimi already in camp for the midweek showdown.
