Kelechi Chibueze: Talented GK who was on Chelsea's books for 10 years released by Sunderland
Published: June 04, 2025
With a statement on the official website, Premier League new boys Sunderland have announced the club's retained and released list following the completion of the 2024-2025 season.
At U21 level, the Black Cats have confirmed that promising Nigerian goalkeeper Kelechi Chibueze is among the players set to leave the club when their contracts expire on June 30, 2025.
It means Chibueze will not make his Premier League debut for Sunderland next season, with the Black Cats securing promotion to the top-flight of English football via the playoffs last month.
He joined Sunderland’s Academy of Light from Leicester City in 2023, signing an initial one-year professional contract.
Before his move to the Foxes, Chibueze was on the books of Chelsea for ten years.
He left Chelsea few months after signing a scholarship deal due to dissatisfaction with the terms of his contract.
Including the playoffs, the shot-stopper appeared in eighteen games for Sunderland in Premier League 2, posting two shutouts while conceding 36 goals.
Kelechi Chibueze has featured in non-competitive matches for England's U15 and U16 national teams and remains eligible to represent Nigeria at U23 level without requiring a change of association.
