Russia 1 Nigeria 1: Arokodare's first international goal rescues Super Eagles after Ajayi own goal

Nigeria came from behind to draw 1-1 with Russia in an international friendly, thanks to a second-half strike from Tolu Arokodare after Semi Ajayi’s unfortunate own goal had given the hosts the lead.

The game began cautiously, with neither side threatening in the early exchanges.

Nigeria enjoyed more of the possession, but Russia’s compact defensive shape kept the Super Eagles at bay.

The breakthrough arrived in the 27th minute when Russia's Krugovoy broke down the left and delivered a dangerous cross that Ajayi inadvertently turned into his own net under pressure from Komlichenko.

Despite falling behind, Nigeria struggled to mount a serious response.

A rare moment of quality saw Fisayo Dele-Bashiru burst through on goal, only to be denied by a brilliant save from Matvei Safonov in the 40th minute.

Russia went into the break with a slender lead, while Nigeria rued that missed opportunity.

The second half brought renewed energy. Russia came close through Glushenkov and Melekhin, but failed to take advantage.

Nigeria gradually grew into the game, and in the 71st minute, substitute Arokodare capitalised on a poor pass from Safonov to calmly slot home and level the score.

Russia reacted quickly and forced goalkeeper Maduka Okoye into a series of impressive saves, most notably from Batrakov’s curling shot and Barinov’s late header.

Nigeria made defensive changes in the closing stages to hold onto the draw, with Igoh Ogbu coming on to shore up the back line.

In the end, both sides had chances to win it, but honours were even. Arokodare’s poise and Okoye’s heroics ensured Nigeria came away with a deserved result after a difficult first half.
