Five takeaways from Super Eagles' impressive draw against Russia in Moscow

The Super Eagles held Russia to a 1-1 draw in an international friendly match played under the lights at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on Friday.

Russia took an early lead in the 27th minute after sustained pressure paid off, forcing Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi into an own goal.

Meanwhile, Arokodare capitalized on a defensive error from the Russians to restore parity for Nigeria.

Allnigeriasoccer.com presents five observations from the match.

Tolu Arokodare Scores Debut Goal

Tolu Arokodare scored his first goal for the Nigerian national team with a crucial equalizer against Russia in the second half.

The Racing Genk striker capitalized on a defensive error from the Russian backline, slotting the ball into the bottom corner in the 71st minute.

It was his first goal for the Super Eagles, having made his debut earlier in March 2025 against Rwanda during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Kigali.

Huge Turnout at Luzhniki Stadium

A massive crowd filled the Luzhniki Stadium to support the Russian national team, despite ongoing tensions in the country due to the conflict with Ukraine.

The passionate home support energized the Russian team, who dominated the early stages and took the lead courtesy of a Nigerian own goal by Semi Ajayi.

Even as Nigeria improved in the second half, Russian fans continued to cheer loudly, celebrating every attacking move and goal-scoring attempt from their team.

Improved Second-Half Display from Nigeria

Nigeria struggled to find their rhythm in the first half, with head coach Eric Chelle opting for press shape featuring only Victor Boniface up front. This tactic allowed Russia - to easily build from the back.

However, the Super Eagles looked much better after the break—especially with the introduction of Tolu Arokodare, who added a new attacking edge.

Russia Concede for the First Time in Almost Two Years

Arokodare’s goal didn’t just level the game—it also ended Russia’s remarkable defensive run.

Before this match, Russia had gone eight consecutive games without conceding a goal. Their last concession came in a 2–2 draw against Kenya on October 16, 2023.

Olakunle Olusegun Makes Super Eagles Debut

Olakunle Olusegun, fresh off a league-winning season with Krasnodar, made his debut for the Super Eagles.

The former Golden Eaglets star came on in the 76th minute to replace Chrisantus Uche, earning his first senior cap for Nigeria.
