Dele-Bashiru on trial in Italy: New Lazio coach to decide Super Eagles star's fate in pre-season

Newly-appointed Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri is set to evaluate Nigerian international Fisayo Dele-Bashiru ahead of a crucial summer transfer window, according to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, via sololalazio.

Dele-Bashiru joined Lazio from Turkish side Hatayspor last summer, but endured a mixed debut season in Serie A.

The dynamic midfielder registered just three goals and one assist across 20 league appearances, struggling to consistently impact domestic matches.

However, his performances in the UEFA Europa League offered a glimpse of his potential.

In the European tournament, Dele-Bashiru notched two goals and two assists in eight outings, playing a key role in Lazio's run in the tournament.

With Lazio finishing a disappointing seventh in the 2024/25 Serie A campaign and missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification, Sarri has been brought in to lead a rebuild at the Stadio Olimpico.

Known for his demanding tactical style, the former Chelsea and Napoli boss is expected to overhaul the squad as he looks to guide the Biancocelesti back into European contention.

Central to his preseason plans will be the assessment of underperforming players – including Dele-Bashiru.

Sarri is reportedly keen to determine whether the midfielder's attributes align with his high-tempo, possession-based philosophy.

Despite his struggles in Italy, the Super Eagles international has attracted interest within the league.

Atalanta's sporting director, Tony D'Amico, is said to be an admirer of Dele-Bashiru and has reportedly recommended the player for a potential switch to the Bergamo-based club.

As Lazio prepare to return for preseason training, Dele-Bashiru's future at the club remains uncertain.

Sarri's final decision could shape not only the player's career but also Lazio's midfield configuration for the upcoming season.
