'We can do it' – Dortmund chief offers positive update on future of Chelsea loanee Chukwuemeka
Published: June 27, 2025
Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl has given a promising update on the future of Chelsea loanee Carney Chukwuemeka, expressing the club's desire to retain the talented midfielder beyond his current loan spell.
Chukwuemeka joined Dortmund on loan from Chelsea in the winter transfer market, with an option to buy reportedly set at 35 million euros.
Known for his technical ability, composure on the ball, and seamless link-up play between midfield and attack, the 21-year-old delivered a strong showing that helped Dortmund secure a Champions League spot for the upcoming season.
Despite the club recently securing the signature of Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland, Chukwuemeka remains firmly in Dortmund’s plans.
His current loan deal is set to expire on June 30, but talks are ongoing with Chelsea as Dortmund look to extend his stay at the Signal Iduna Park.
Speaking after Dortmund's Club World Cup group stage victory over Ulsan Hyundai FC, Kehl expressed the club’s confidence and desire to extend the stay of the Nigeria-eligible midfielder, emphasizing Dortmund’s intention to maintain squad continuity ahead of the upcoming season.
"I'm very confident we can do it," Kehl was quoted as saying by BVBWLD.
"We don't want to get any worse. That's why we'd like to keep him. Chelsea knows that, too."
Chukwuemeka, who is eligible to represent Nigeria at the international level, struggled for game time at Chelsea earlier in the season.
Before the Fifa Club World Cup, he made 13 appearances across all competitions for Dortmund, scoring one goal and playing a key role in their strong finish to the season.
As the summer transfer window intensifies, Dortmund remain hopeful of reaching an agreement with Chelsea to keep Chukwuemeka as part of their long-term project heading into the 2025/2026 campaign.
