Confirmed team news: Chelsea loanee Chukwuemeka ruled out of Borussia Dortmund v Monterrey
Published: July 01, 2025
Borussia Dortmund manager Nico Kovac has confirmed that Chelsea loanee Carney Chukwuemeka will miss their Fifa Club World Cup Round of 16 encounter against Monterrey on Wednesday morning due to illness.
Chukwuemeka joined Borussia Dortmund on a short-term deal during the winter transfer window and featured in 10 Bundesliga matches, scoring once as the club secured Champions League qualification for next season.
The 21-year-old midfielder's loan has been extended to cover Borussia Dortmund’s campaign in the Club World Cup.
He has also been a consistent presence in the Club World Cup, featuring in all three matches as the German side advanced to the knockout stage.
During a press conference ahead of the Monterrey fixture, Kovac announced Chukwuemeka’s unavailability.
"Carney is ill and didn’t travel with us," Kovac was quoted as saying by Dortmund's official webpage.
Chukwuemeka’s absence is seen as a significant blow for the Bundesliga side as they aim to book a place in the quarterfinals of the prestigious tournament.
Nevertheless, the midfielder will be hoping for a swift recovery to continue his impressive run and strengthen his case for a permanent stay at Signal Iduna Park beyond his current loan deal.
